Short Story Takes First Place

I'm honored to announce that Tell Me What I Want to Hear won first place in this year's St. Louis Writers' Guild Short Story Contest.

The contest, which has been held every year since the founding of the Guild in 1920, is considered one of the oldest and most prestigious in the nation. And since Tennessee Williams was the first winner, Tell Me What I Want to Hear joins some distinguished titles.

For Three Days (Dec. 14, 15, 16), In the Space of an Atom is Free

There’s nothing like someone trying to kill you to give your life direction.

Yes, I had been in a funk, drifting from job to job, but that all changed when Jones came at me with a gun. And when he, the research lab where I had worked, and the chief scientist all disappeared, I was left with nothing but a piece of mind-blowing technology and a story so bizarre that the police were more concerned about my mental health than the attempted murder. I needed help to understand what I’d gotten myself into. Enter young, beautiful Dr. Diane Stapleton. And when I accidentally involved her in this deadly nightmare, I knew only one thing for sure. I couldn’t let her die.

As a finalist in the 2017 Wishing Shelf Book Awards and 2018 EPIC eBook Awards, In the Space of an Atom is fast, light suspense with a bit of science and a touch of romance that you won’t put down until the final page.

Mind in Chains is on sale for 99 cents through Oct. 14

I never knew medicine could be so divisive until St. Louis exploded in domestic violence.

After an attempt was made on the life of a medical researcher at my fiancé’s home, Nicole and I were plunged into a war on US soil that could have no winners. The Crusader’s for Common Sense would impose their sense of morality on medical policy or more would die. Replaced as the lead of the investigation when the violence escalated, rookie FBI agent Rebecca Marte was willing to listen to my thoughts—however bizarre they might seem—until they proved true, and Nicole and I were brought face to face with the killers in a final, deadly gambit. And as it unfolded, I wondered if its cost would be more than I could pay.

“… you will not be able to define the line between reality and speculation in this tale torn from tomorrow’s headlines.”

Amazon to Stop Being a Library

If you're thinking, I didn't know Amazon was ever a library, they weren't ... well, not officially anyway. But their Kindle book return policy let people act like it was one.

Specifically, Amazon allowed the return of any Kindle book within seven days for a full refund regardless of how much of the book had been read. And so, some people would order a book, read it in a week, and return it.

For authors, this practice didn't just result in lost royalties, it was a cost. That's because Amazon charges a delivery fee for Kindle books that is not refunded to authors when the book is returned. As a result, some authors ended up owning money despite heavy sales (see the tweet at https://twitter.com/LdyDisney/status/1532056209658105862).

The Authors Guild, a professional organization for writers, brought this to the attention of Amazon, and as a result they "... will deactivate the self-service return option for any book read past 10% by the end of the year."

Thanks Amazon. I love libraries, but I'm glad you're getting out of that business.

In Memory of Matthew Mather

There are a few young authors whose work I like so much that I subscribe to their newsletter. Matthew Mather was one of them. So, I was shocked and saddened to receive a note yesterday saying that he had passed away.

Matthew wrote in genres that I enjoy--technothrillers, suspense, hard science fiction. If you are a fan of those genres, I strongly encourage you to check out his work. Here is his link to his author page on Amazon:   https://amzn.to/3frnsGU

I'll end this post with a few words from the email I received.

"It is with profound sadness that the family and friends of Matthew Mather announce that he was tragically taken from us in a car accident on September 13th.

Matt was a beloved science fiction author, husband, father, brother, son and friend. He was a warm, loyal and generous man who loved and lived life to the fullest. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and will live on in his books and children."

Looking Back Since Killer in the Retroscape Was Published in 2018

I’m not sure if George Orwell, Margaret Atwood, or Aldous Huxley ever looked back five or ten years after publishing their seminal dystopian novels, but curiosity got the best of me. Obviously, I knew that Killer in the Retroscape: A Near-Future Mystery had foretold the challenges of the COVID pandemic more than a year before they occurred. As one reviewer put it, it accurately anticipated “… the effects of a pandemic on the population - social distancing, lockdowns, masks, and all the other precautions people were forced to take in 2020 – 2021.” The fiction did, however, miss on the pandemic’s duration and so, it doesn’t speak to the COVID fatigue we are all facing today.

Killer in the Retroscape predicted a threat from declining world population. In all fairness, however, the population of some countries was already decreasing in 2018. Japan’s population, for example, has been going down since 2008. But the issue has certainly received a lot more attention recently, with Elon Musk declaring that "Population collapse is the biggest threat to civilization" in a 2022 Twitter post. I’m not sure I’d raise it to the “biggest threat” just yet, but unfortunately, it's climbing the charts.

The book also foresaw workers coming to accept intelligent machines … albeit after some resistance. And are we starting to see that? According to one tech company, Zebra Technologies Corp, while some remain wary, many warehouse workers “… credit AMRs [autonomous mobile robots] with helping to increase their productivity (80%), reduce the number of mistakes they make (73%), and facilitate advancement to new roles or opportunities (65%).” And these are autonomous units rather than pre-programmed machines, which in many ways is the holy grail of artificially intelligent robots.

Of course, there are a few predictions in the book that have me concerned. In it, for example, the world beats climate change. I hope that one isn’t slipping away from us. As for the rest of the events that led to the downfall of humanity? Well, discussing them would make this note one gigantic spoiler, wouldn’t it?

So instead, I’ll let you find out for yourself for less than a dollar, now through August 12.

From Now until July 18, From the Mind of a Witch is Only 99 cents

When ex-FBI agent Rebecca Marte considered the possible challenges of her new career as a private investigator, she never thought one of them would be to clear a witch charged with killing a man during a coven ritual. The strange case becomes nearly impossible, however, when the witch offers her defense. She's innocent by reason of possession.

Thrust into that uncharted territory, Rebecca involves her psychologist friend, Dr. Sam “Doc” Price, both to help her with the case and him with a losing battle to find his kidnapped fiancée.

Back to What I Enjoy Most

Indie authors wear a lot of different hats - writer (of course), publisher, marketer. And in that last role, book launches are the high point. They are the culmination of months of work (thirteen of them in my case between the releases of From the Mind of a Witch and A Wrinkle in the Mind).

But to modify an old adage, the worst day of writing is better than the best day of marketing. It's good to be back to writing!

Next up for me? Book 6 in the series, tentatively titled, The Beating Heart of a Mind. And although all of my books give a nod to psychology, Heart will be the first I'd consider a psychological mystery/thriller.

More in the weeks to come ....
