Dark Crime Fiction in the Past, Present, and Future?

Past and present, OK. Crime noir involves morally ambiguous characters and a focus on the darker aspects of human nature. 

But the future? What are the psychological motivations behind crime in, say, 2068 as in Killer in the Retroscape? By coincidence, the book starts with a pandemic, which led one reviewer to say, “… the extraordinary thing for me is how closely Perrin anticipated the effects of a pandemic on the population ... social distancing, lockdowns, masks, and all the other precautions people were forced to take in 2020 – 2021.
